Slopes near Bratislava with the wine towns of Pezinok and Modra.

The Little Carpathians is a wine region in south-western Slovakia, on the slopes of a low mountain range north and east of the capital Bratislava. It is one of the largest and best-known wine regions of the country. The main wine towns are Pezinok, Modra and Svätý Jur. The climate is warm and continental with a long autumn. Soils vary: granite, gneiss, limestone and loess.

The main grapes are Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling (Rizling vlašský), Riesling, and reds such as Blaufränkisch (Frankovka modrá) and others. Wines are white, red, rosé and sparkling, often with good acidity and fruity flavour.

The Little Carpathian Wine Route runs through the region, and you can walk or cycle from village to village and look into cellars. Many houses in the towns were built as long ago as the Middle Ages, and wine is still stored in their cellars.

For comparison with its neighbours: to the west lies Austria's Lower Austria, to the south across the Danube Southern Slovakia, and to the north Nitra.
