📍 Southern Slovakia
The warm Danube lowland.
Southern Slovakia is a wine area in the south of the country, along the Hungarian border, on the warm Danubian Lowland. It is part of Slovak winemaking. The area runs along the country's southern border, over hills and plains.
The climate is the warmest in Slovakia: a long summer, an early spring and little rain. Soils are loess, sand and volcanic rock, giving varied wines. Wines used to be made mostly for the mass market; today producers pay more attention to quality.
The main grapes are Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling and Müller-Thurgau. Among reds are Blaufränkisch and other varieties. Whites are more often dry or off-dry, fresh and light.
The area's wines are little known outside the country and are worth trying on the spot. The Slovak Tokaj area and the Small Carpathian region lie nearby, and on the border with Hungary runs the Danube. The area's wines go well with light snacks, fish and poultry, and the reds with meat and cheese. The area is divided into several small districts whose names appear on labels. Many estates sell wine on the spot, and for a traveller it is a way to get to know the food and people of the region.
