📍 Eastern Slovakia
The eastern area near Košice.
Eastern Slovakia is a wine region in eastern Slovakia, around the city of Košice. It is the easternmost of the country's wine regions, bordering Ukraine and Hungary. The climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers, so vineyards grow on south-facing slopes and in sheltered places. Wine districts are scattered in small islands across the plain and the foothills of the Vihorlat, the Zemplín Hills and the Slovak Ore Mountains.
White wines form the basis of production. Among grapes, Welschriesling (Rizling vlašský), Müller-Thurgau and other whites are the most common. They give light, fresh wines with low alcohol and good acidity. There are red wines too, but fewer.
The region is split into several subdistricts, each with its own small estates. Wine goes mostly to the local market and to restaurants in Košice.
For comparison with its neighbours: to the east, by the Hungarian border, lies Tokaj, the best-known wine area nearby, which makes golden sweet wines. The Slovak Tokaj district is a separate region, and to the west lie Central Slovakia and Nitra.
