📍 Central Slovakia
South-facing slopes by the Hungarian border.
Central Slovakia (Stredoslovenská wine region) is a wine region in central and southern Slovakia, on the southern slopes of hills near the Hungarian border. It is one of the six wine regions of the country. The vineyards are mostly around Modrý Kameň.
The climate is warm for Slovakia, south-facing slopes heat up well, and nights are cool. This gives fresh, aromatic wines. The main grapes are the whites Welschriesling and Müller-Thurgau, as well as Pinot Blanc, Rhine Riesling and Traminer. Among reds, Pinot Noir, Frankovka and André are grown.
The region is smaller than Little Carpathians and South Slovakia, and its wines rarely reach export, but local wineries like to welcome visitors.
Central Slovakia is part of Slovak winemaking. Nearby lie the Hungarian districts of Nógrád, and in the east Tokaj, the best-known sweet wine area of the region. The region's whites suit fish and light dishes, and the reds meat. The name Central Slovakia on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
