🍇 Grüner Veltliner
Austria's main white grape; it gives fresh wines with a peppery note.
Grüner Veltliner is the main white grape of Austria. It accounts for about a third of all the country's vineyards. The name can be translated as "green Veltliner". Its wines are fresh, with high acidity and a recognisable peppery note like white pepper. The main areas are the Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal in Lower Austria, as well as the Weinviertel, Wagram, Traisental and Vienna. The grape also grows in neighbouring countries: in Moravia in Czechia (Mikulov, Znojmo) and in Slovakia (Little Carpathians, Nitra). Many wines go under the name DAC, which marks the typical style of an area. The Wachau has its own category of light dry wines, Steinfeder. Wines range from light and zesty to full and suited to ageing. They smell of apple and lemon, and with age notes of nuts appear. Grüner Veltliner also enters the Viennese Gemischter Satz. Genetically the grape is a descendant of Traminer and a little-known variety, Sankt Georgen. It is served with fish, vegetables and Wiener schnitzel.
