🗺️ Slovak wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grape varieties, appellations.
Slovak wine is the wine of a country in central Europe, divided into six wine regions: Malokarpatská, Južnoslovenská, Nitrianska, Stredoslovenská, Východoslovenská and Tokaj. The biggest vineyards lie in the south and south-west, near the Danube and the Little Carpathians.
Slovakia grows international varieties as well as local and newly bred ones. Varieties bred in the country include Diamant, Nória, Milia and Rubín Slovenský. Dry, off-dry and sweet wines are made. The country also has its own part of the Tokaj region, where Tokaj wine is made, including Tokaj aszú and essence.
Slovak tradition also knows seasonal drinks: young wine, federweisser and burčiak. Wine follows the European rules on designation of origin. Slovakia borders Austria, Hungary and Czechia, and its wines are close in style to those of its neighbours. Grape growing in these places has been known for a very long time.
