🥃 Loch Lomond Distillery
Scottish distillery in Alexandria (Dunbartonshire) by Loch Lomond; makes malt and grain whisky; family of brands Inchmurrin, Inchfad, Croftengea.
Loch Lomond Distillery is a Scottish distillery in the town of Alexandria, in West Dunbartonshire, by Loch Lomond. It is not one brand but a family: different styles of malt whisky and a grain whisky are made here. The distillery belongs to the Loch Lomond Group, which according to public sources is privately owned.
History. The founding year is given differently by different sources: 1964, 1965 and 1966 are the most common, so we do not quote a single date. According to Whiskypedia, Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse bought the distillery around 1986 and in 1989 set up Loch Lomond Distillers to run it. Later came Loch Lomond Distillery Company, which also managed Glen Scotia and Littlemill. In 2014 it was bought by the private fund Exponent, and the Bulloch family still owns EB Alexandria.
Range. According to Whiskypedia, the portfolio includes Inchmurrin, Inchfad, Inchmoan, Croftengea and Old Rhosdhu — different styles, including peated ones, all made at one distillery. A whisky simply named Loch Lomond is also sold.
How it is made. Technical details (still shapes, the Coffey still for grain whisky, capacity) differ between sources, so we do not spell them out here; check the producer's official website. The law requires at least 3 years of maturation in oak casks of up to 700 litres in Scotland.
Why this matters to you. The words "Loch Lomond" appear on different products, so check the full name of the line: Inchmurrin and Croftengea are not the same thing. The age on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
