Maremma Toscana is an Italian appellation (PDO) for wines of the coastal Maremma area in the province of Grosseto, in the southwest of Tuscany. It is plains and hills by the Tyrrhenian Sea. The climate is warm and dry, with a sea breeze. The land here was once marshy and was drained, then turned into vineyards and fields.
Red, white and rosé still wines are made under this name. The main red grape is Sangiovese, along with Ciliegiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon. White wine is made mainly from Vermentino. Reds are soft and fruity with a light spice. Whites are fresh, with citrus and herbs. Many estates also use international grapes, so the wine varies.
Maremma Toscana is tied to the Maremma area. The appellation is recent, from 2011, and covers a large territory. Narrower and better-known wines are made nearby, for example Morellino di Scansano. Maremma wines go well with meat, pasta, seafood and Tuscan cooking.
