📍 Maremma
The southern coast of Tuscany, home of Morellino.
Maremma is the southern coast of Tuscany in Italy, along the Tyrrhenian Sea. It used to be marshy lowland. Today it has hills, sea and vineyards.
The climate is warm and Mediterranean, with a sea breeze. Grapes ripen in the warmth and give softer, richer wines than in the inland parts of Tuscany. The main red grape is Sangiovese. Its wine here is called Morellino di Scansano. White wines are often made from Vermentino, Ansonica and Trebbiano, for example Bianco di Pitigliano and Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario.
Maremma has several zones with their own names: Montecucco Sangiovese, Monteregio di Massa Marittima, Capalbio, Sovana and Parrina. The general name "Maremma Toscana" covers the whole area.
Maremma is part of Tuscany, and its wines combine the Tuscan style with the warmth of the coast. They go well with fish, grilled meat and Tuscan dishes.
