🍷 Puttonyos
The old measure of Tokaji sweetness: how many baskets of sweet berries were added to the cask.
Puttonyos is an old measure of the sweetness of Tokaj wine. The word means a basket or hod in which sweet berries with noble rot were carried. The more such baskets were added to a barrel of wine, the sweeter it turned out.
In the past the label of Tokaji Aszú showed from three to six puttonyos. Today the rules have changed, and sweet Tokaj must contain at least 120 grams of sugar per litre, which matches at least five puttonyos. The berries in question are aszú, dried on the vine. A thick paste is made from them and poured over young wine.
Puttonyos is directly tied to Tokaji Aszú: it is a way of saying how sweet it is. The word is used in Hungary and in the Slovak part of Tokaj. For a buyer, the number on an older bottle is a hint of what to expect in taste. The higher the number, the thicker and sweeter the wine.
