The western coast of Liguria.

Riviera Ligure di Ponente ("western Riviera") is the western coast of Liguria, a narrow strip between the Ligurian Sea and the mountains of the Maritime Alps and the Apennines. It is part of the Italian Riviera, which stretches for about 350 kilometres. The area belongs to the Liguria wine region. Vineyards lie on steep terraces above the sea, beside olive groves and flower gardens.

The main wine district is named Riviera Ligure di Ponente. The main white grape is Vermentino, and Pigato, a local form closely related to it, gives a fragrant wine with a slight bitter note. Reds are made from Rossese and Ormeasco. Rossese di Dolceacqua is a separate red appellation named after the village of Dolceacqua near the French border; Ormeasco di Pornassio is made from Ormeasco, the Ligurian name for Dolcetto.

The wines are drunk mostly on the coast: they suit fish, seafood and local cooking with olive oil and basil. The region has other appellations as well: Terrazze dell'Imperiese and Colline Savonesi.

Liguria is a small wine region, but its wines are tasty, even if they rarely reach other countries.
