The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grape varieties, appellations.

Turkish wine is the wine and winemaking of Turkey. The country lies where Europe meets Asia, and grapes have been grown on its land for thousands of years: Anatolia is considered one of the oldest viticulture areas.

Vineyards are spread across several regions: Thrace, Marmara, Aegean, Central Anatolia, Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia and the Mediterranean. The climate runs from the warm sea to cold highlands.

Turkey has many local grapes. Reds include Boğazkere, Öküzgözü, Kalecik Karası, Karalahna, Pehlivan Kara and Papazkarası. Whites include Çavuş, Narince and Emir. They make wines little known in the world. International varieties are also grown.

Grape culture in the country also includes drinks that are not wine: rakı, an aniseed spirit, and pekmez, a thickened grape syrup. Most of the population is Muslim and drinks little wine, but the tradition survives and production is growing.
