📜 Vin Santo del Chianti

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

A sweet wine from partly dried grapes, aged in small barrels, from the Chianti area.

Vin Santo del Chianti is a sweet wine from the Chianti zone in Tuscany, Italy. It is made from partly dried grapes. The bunches are dried for several months on straw mats or hung under a roof. The berries lose water and their sugar becomes concentrated.

The main varieties are Trebbiano and Malvasia del Chianti. The juice ferments and ages in small barrels called caratelli. Ageing lasts for years, and the wine becomes deep gold or amber, tasting of dried fruit, nuts and honey. A rosé version also exists.

Vin Santo is tied to the tradition of drying grapes, like appassimento or passito. In Tuscany it is often served with almond biscuits called cantucci. The name means holy wine: by one account it was once used at religious services. The wine is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. The wine is usually drunk in small servings, as a dessert wine.
