🍷 Aerated sparkling wine
An EU category: wine whose bubbles are added from a cylinder rather than produced by fermentation.
Aerated sparkling wine is a separate EU wine category. Its bubbles come not from fermentation but from carbon dioxide added from a cylinder, as in soda. The pressure in the bottle must be at least 3 atmospheres, the same as for true sparkling wine.
This method is called carbonation. It is fast and cheap, with no second fermentation in bottle or tank, so it is used for simple, low-cost wines. The bubbles are usually larger and fade quickly.
EU rules require the label to state that the gas was added, for example obtained by adding carbon dioxide. This lets buyers tell it apart from sparkling wine made by the traditional method or the Charmat method. Aerated does not mean bad, but such wine has nothing to do with champagne and similar styles.
