📜 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore
An aged red wine from Aglianico on the slopes of the extinct Vulture volcano.
Aglianico del Vulture Superiore is an aged red wine from the Aglianico grape. It is made on the slopes of the extinct volcano Vulture in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. The name is protected as a PDO.
The soils here are volcanic and the vineyards lie at altitude. Days are warm and nights cool, and Aglianico, a late grape, ripens slowly. The wine is dark and full-bodied, with high acidity and firm tannins. It shows dark berries, plums, spice and smoke. The "Superiore" category is stricter than the ordinary one: the wine is aged longer and does not go on sale right after the harvest.
This is one of the main red wines of southern Italy. It is often compared with northern reds for ageing ability, though its character is its own. The best wines keep for many years. They are served with meat, game and aged cheeses. Vulture is a special place: volcanic soil gives minerality and the mountain climate gives freshness. The grape name "Aglianico" is linked to a Greek word, and it is regarded as one of the oldest grapes of southern Italy.
