A red wine grape of southern Italy giving strong, tannic wines.

Aglianico is a red wine grape of southern Italy. It gives strong, rich wines with high acidity and noticeable tannins. It is considered one of the most serious red grapes of the south of the country.

The main places where it grows are Campania and Basilicata. In Campania this is the Irpinia area, where Taurasi is made, as well as Sannio, Benevento and Cilento. In Basilicata it is the slopes of the Vulture volcano, where Aglianico del Vulture is made. Volcanic soils and cool nights help the grapes ripen slowly and keep freshness.

The grape ripens late, sometimes only at the end of October. So it needs a long warm autumn. Wines from Aglianico are often aged in barrel and bottle for several years, and over time they become softer. When young they can be harsh.

Aglianico is one of the oldest grapes of Italy. It is often called the Barolo of the south for its ability to keep for a long time, but the comparison is only approximate.
