📜 Taurasi
A powerful aged Aglianico red from Irpinia, "the Barolo of the South".
Taurasi is a powerful, aged red wine from the Irpinia area of Campania in southern Italy. It is often called "the Barolo of the south": the comparison is with the red wine Barolo of the north, since Taurasi is also dense, tannic and long-lived.
The base of the wine is the Aglianico grape. It is a late red grape with thick skins and high acidity, ripening in the hills of Irpinia where nights are cool. By the rules Aglianico must form most of the blend. The wine must be aged for several years, in cask and in bottle, so it reaches the market no earlier than three years after the harvest.
Young Taurasi is very tannic and closed, and with age it opens with notes of cherry, prune, tobacco and spice. It goes well with meat and aged cheeses.
The name is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. It is tied to Irpinia, where Aglianico grows. All the wines are red and still.
