📜 Aglianico del Vulture
Powerful red wines from Aglianico on the slopes of the extinct Vulture volcano.
Aglianico del Vulture is a powerful red wine from the Italian region of Basilicata. The vineyards lie on the slopes of the extinct volcano Vulture. The wine name is protected as a designation of origin (PDO). The wine is based on the Aglianico grape, one of the oldest and noblest red varieties of southern Italy. On volcanic soil it gives dark, full wines with high acidity, firm tannin and notes of cherry, prune and spice. The altitude of the vineyards and cool nights help the berries ripen slowly. The zone makes still red wines and also sparkling wine. The best reds age well: when young they can be harsh and need time to soften. There are also aged versions called "riserva". The wine is served with meat, game and aged cheese. It is regarded as one of the main wines of southern Italy, holding its own against the northern classics. This wine shows well how the climate and soil of southern Italy can give wines worthy of long ageing.
