🥃 Aguardente Bagaceira Alentejana
Portuguese grape-marc spirit under the regional name «Alentejano» (Beja, Évora and Portalegre districts); EU application filed in 2017.
Aguardente Bagaceira Alentejana is a Portuguese grape-marc spirit under the regional name «Alentejano», covering all municipalities of the Beja, Évora and Portalegre districts. At home it is defined by Portaria 276/2010, and an EU geographical indication application was filed for it in 2017; registration is not yet complete.
Law. Portaria 276/2010 of 19 May 2010 extended the regional name «Alentejano» to two aguardentes: the grape-marc spirit and the wine spirit (aguardente vínica). For spirit drinks the name takes the feminine form «Alentejana». The grapes must come from the varieties listed in Annex II, and certification is handled by the Regional Wine Commission of the Alentejo (CVRA).
EU rules. In the eAmbrosia register the application carries number PGI-PT-02374 and the status «applied». So the general requirements for grape-marc spirits apply (category 6 of Regulation (EU) 2019/787): at least 37.5% ABV in the bottle, methanol up to 1,000 g per hectolitre of pure alcohol, volatile substances from 140 g. Flavouring such a spirit is not allowed.
Don't confuse it with Alentejo. Aguardente Bagaceira Alentejo has been registered in the EU since 1989, is tied to the DO Alentejo name with its eight subregions and carries the age labels «Old» and «Very Old». The regional «Alentejana» covers a wider area, the whole south from Portalegre to Beja. The Vinhos do Alentejo portal lists, for example, a bagaceira from the Adega de Borba cooperative at 40% ABV.
Why it matters to you. The word «Alentejana» on a label means a regional name, not a DOC; the label is agreed in advance with the CVRA. There is no mandatory ageing, so the spirit can be very young and sharp. Do not drive after drinking. WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
