A Burgundy village by the hill of Corton in the Côte de Beaune, known for red wines from Pinot Noir.

Aloxe-Corton is a Burgundy village at the foot of the hill of Corton in the Côte de Beaune, known for red wines from Pinot Noir. The name is protected as a PDO. White wines from Chardonnay are made here too.

The hill of Corton rises above the village and carries the grands crus: the red Corton and the white Corton-Charlemagne. The village is famous above all for the latter. The village appellation Aloxe-Corton occupies the lower slopes. Red wines here are fuller and more powerful than in neighbouring villages, with notes of dark berries and spice. The whites are rich, with a mineral tone.

An old legend links the village's white wine with the emperor Charlemagne: red wine supposedly stained his beard, so he ordered white grapes to be planted. Historians treat the legend with caution, but it is well known. Aloxe-Corton is part of French wine and the Côte de Beaune. For lovers of Burgundy it is a place where reds and whites reach a high level. The reds are best kept for several years and open up in the bottle. They are served with game and red meat, and the whites with fish, poultry and creamy sauces.
