Puligny-Montrachet is a village in the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy, France, famous for great white wines from Chardonnay. The name combines the village name with that of the famous Montrachet vineyard, which was added to it in the 19th century. It is a protected appellation, a PDO.
The wines made here are mostly white, although a little red from Pinot Noir is found. White Puligny is marked by finesse, minerality and tense acidity, with flavours of lemon, white flowers and nuts. The best vineyards have grand cru and premier cru status. The best known are Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Les Caillerets.
The soils are limestone and marl, which give the wines character. The best wines can keep for decades. Puligny-Montrachet is part of the Côte de Beaune and the Burgundy climats, slope plots recognised as UNESCO heritage. The wines are expensive, and the best are among the best-known white wines in the world. They are served with fish, shellfish and poultry.
