Alsace Grand Cru Kitterlé is a top-category (grand cru) vineyard site in Alsace, on a steep slope above the town of Guebwiller. Kitterlé is one of the Alsace grands crus, the top-category sites, in eastern France. It lies on a steep slope above the town of Guebwiller, in the Haut-Rhin département. The slope faces south and warms well, so the grapes get a lot of sun.
The soils are sandstone, light and well drained. They give the wine a mineral, focused character. Kitterlé is known for Riesling: the wines are dry and austere, with high acidity, and keep for a long time. Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris are also grown here. Those grapes give richer, more aromatic wines. Sweet versions from late-picked grapes also exist.
Kitterlé belongs to the still white wines of Alsace, and in viticulture it is valued for the combination of slope, soil and climate. Grands crus have strict rules: set varieties, yield limits and minimum sugar in the berries. A wine with such a name points to a specific site, not to the whole region.
