Alsace Grand Cru Schoenenbourg is a grand cru vineyard above the village of Riquewihr in Alsace, eastern France. It is known for Riesling, as well as late-harvest sweet wines. The slope faces south, gets plenty of sun and is shielded from rain by the Vosges, so grapes ripen well.
The soil is clay with marl, gypsum and limestone. This mix gives the wines depth and character. Riesling from Schoenenbourg is usually dry and mineral, with notes of lemon, blackcurrant and smoke. In good years late-harvest and sweet wines are made here from berries with noble rot. They can keep for decades.
The appellation is protected as a PDO. Besides Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris are permitted. Schoenenbourg is one of the region's 51 grands crus and lies in the Haut-Rhin department. The name of the vineyard appears on the label. For white wine lovers it is one of the best-known sites in Alsace.
