π Bacchus
A white wine grape bred in Germany, popular in England.
Bacchus is a white wine grape bred in Germany in the 1930s. It was created by crossing varieties including MΓΌller-Thurgau. It is named after Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. The grape gives aromatic wines with notes of elderflower, citrus and fresh grass, often compared to Sauvignon Blanc.
Bacchus ripens early, so it suits cool climates. In Germany it is grown in Franconia and Rheinhessen. But it is especially popular in England, where it is one of the most planted varieties after Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. It is grown in Kent, Devon, Cornwall, Suffolk, Essex and other counties of southern and eastern England.
In recent years Bacchus has become a symbol of English wine. Fresh still wines are made from it, and sometimes sparkling ones. They go well with fish, salads and light dishes. Thanks to early ripening, the grape has coped even with cool years.
