📜 Bandol

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

An appellation on the Provence coast known for powerful Mourvèdre reds.

Bandol is an appellation on the coast of Provence in southern France, by the Mediterranean. It is known for powerful red wines from the Mourvèdre grape. Under the rules Mourvèdre must be the base of the red wine, with Grenache and Cinsault added. Rosé and white wines are also made.

The vineyards stand on terraces, with slopes facing the sea. The terraces are called “restanques” and are held up by dry stone walls. Summers are hot and sunny, and a wind blows from the sea. Mourvèdre ripens late and loves warmth, so it grows less well in other areas.

Red Bandol is aged in large oak casks for at least 18 months. The wine is dark and full, with aromas of black berries, herbs and spice. It ages well. Rosé Bandol is dry and fresh and ranks among the best Provençal rosés.

Bandol belongs to Provence and to the wines of France. Mourvèdre, the main grape, has long been linked to this coast. Alcohol is for adults.
