Organic wine from a vineyard run by special rules and a lunar calendar.

Biodynamic wine is wine from grapes grown by biodynamic rules. It is organic wine with additional requirements. The idea was proposed by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s and applied to wine later.

No synthetic fertilisers or chemicals are used in the vineyard. Special preparations based on manure, silica and herbs are applied. Work follows the lunar calendar: the phases of the Moon are thought to influence the vine and wine. The aim is to make the vineyard a whole living system, with animals and varied plants.

In the cellar too, usually the minimum is done: wild yeasts, little sulfur and sometimes no filtering. So biodynamic wines are often close to natural wines. But not every natural wine is biodynamic, nor the reverse.

Such wines are made in France, Germany, Austria and other countries. Compliance is confirmed by special organisations whose marks appear on the bottle. Scientific debate on the benefit of biodynamics goes on, but many estates find it useful for soil and taste.
