📍 Bizkaia (Bizkaiko Txakolina)
Txakoli from the province of Bizkaia.
Bizkaiko Txakolina is a wine appellation in the province of Bizkaia (Biscay) in the Basque Country of northern Spain. Vineyards lie on hills and slopes not far from the Bay of Biscay and the city of Bilbao. The climate is damp and mild, often cool and cloudy, summers are not hot, and sea winds save the grapes from overheating.
The wine is called “txakoli”. It is a dry white, light, with high acidity, low alcohol and a slight fizz. Its scent is green apple, lemon and sea breeze. It is served with seafood and pintxos. By tradition txakoli is poured into the glass from a great height, to aerate the wine.
The main grape is Hondarrabi Zuri, a local white. The red variety Hondarrabi Beltza goes into rosé and red wines. Sparkling versions are made too. The vineyard area is small, and the wine is mostly drunk locally.
For comparison with its neighbours: the Basque Country has two other txakoli appellations, Getariako near the town of Getaria, from where the wine's fame spread, and Arabako in the province of Álava, while to the south lies Rioja Alavesa with its reds.
