📜 Brunello di Montalcino
One of Italy's most famous red wines, from Sangiovese around the town of Montalcino.
Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most famous red wines of Italy. It is made from Sangiovese around the hill town of Montalcino in Tuscany. The local name of the grape is Brunello, which gave the wine its name.
The rules are strict: the wine cannot be sold before 1 January of the fifth year after harvest, and Riserva before the sixth. Part of the time the wine rests in barrels, part in bottle. As a result it is powerful and structured, with aromas of cherry, leather, dry herbs and spice. Good bottles can keep for decades.
Montalcino lies on high ground, the climate is warm and dry, and soils vary from clay to stony. The appellation covers still red wines. It was among the first Italian wines to receive the top DOCG status. It is served with meat, game and aged cheeses. Brunello shows what Sangiovese can do in a good place.
