📜 Morellino di Scansano
Red wines from Sangiovese from the hills of Scansano in the Tuscan Maremma.
Morellino di Scansano is a red wine from the Maremma, in south-western Tuscany, Italy. It is made on the hills around the town of Scansano. The base of the wine is Sangiovese, which is locally called Morellino. The rules allow some other grapes, but this one is the main grape.
The climate here is warm, the sea is close, and winds from the coast cool the vineyards. Soils vary from clay to volcanic rock. The wine is fruity, with notes of cherry and herbs, softer and friendlier than Chianti, and is often drunk young. Aged versions marked riserva are richer and denser.
Morellino di Scansano is a still red wine protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. The wine has become popular outside Italy in recent decades. It pairs well with Tuscan food: cured meats, meat pasta and pecorino cheese. It is a notable example showing that Tuscany is more than Chianti.
