Caprice des Dieux is an oval French soft bloomy-rind cheese created in 1956 in Illoud (Haute-Marne); the brand belongs to the Savencia group.

Caprice des Dieux is an oval French soft cheese with a white bloomy rind (pâte molle à croûte fleurie), sold in a blue box. According to Savencia, Jean-Noël Bongrain created it in 1956 at the family dairy in Illoud, Haute-Marne, after five years of research. The brand belongs to the Savencia group.

Savencia calls it the first “cheese speciality”: its recipe, oval (calisson) shape, blue box and name, meaning “whim of the gods”, set it apart from other cheeses. The first case was sold on 21 June 1956; later the cheese went on sale in Belgium, Switzerland and Canada.

According to the producer, the recipe is 98% milk, cream, a pinch of salt and lactic cultures. The milk is collected within 70 km of the brand's two cheese dairies.

The brand's site shows the classic Caprice des Dieux (including a 300 g family format), Mini Caprice in 50 g portions (packs of 3, 4 or 6), En Cas de Caprice with 15 g portions, and the fresh cheese Caprice des Anges.
