Shostka is a Ukrainian cheese brand made at the plant in the town of Shostka, Sumy region. The brand covers hard and processed cheeses.
Owner. In October 2021 the French Lactalis group bought the Shostka plant together with the brand; it is one of three Lactalis sites in Ukraine, alongside Mykolaiv and Pavlohrad. The group's Ukrainian business has operated since 1996. According to the owner, Shostka's cheesemakers work and train with French and Dutch colleagues, drawing on the group's experience with hard cheese.
Ranges. Hard cheeses: Ukrainskyi Firmovyi, Shostka and Lytsar with 50% fat, Hollandiia with 45%, and the semi-hard Do Snidanku, sold as pieces, slices and by weight. They are Dutch-type cheeses close to gouda and edam; in international terms they are semi-hard cheeses. Processed cheeses: Vershkovyi, Yantar, Hollandskyi and Druzhba with 37 to 50% fat. The brand's Krem-Syr Klasyka is labelled by the producer as a heat-treated curd product, so it is not a cheese.
How to choose. Hard cheeses suit sandwiches, cheese boards and baking; processed cheeses suit toast, soups and sauces. The product category and fat content are always on the label. The page Processed cheeses and cheese products explains how cheese differs from cheese products. Keep cheese wrapped in the fridge.
