📍 Centre-Loire
The eastern part with Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé.
Centre-Loire is a historic region in France, the eastern part of the Loire Valley. It holds the famous vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. The area lies far from the ocean, in the middle of the country, so the climate is more continental.
The main white variety is Sauvignon Blanc and the main red is Pinot Noir. White wines are fresh, with high acidity and notes of citrus and green herbs. Reds and rosés from Pinot Noir are light. Soils are limestone, flint and chalk, which gives a mineral touch.
The region includes the zones of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Pouilly-sur-Loire, Quincy, Reuilly, Menetou-Salon, Châteaumeillant, Coteaux du Giennois, Côtes de la Charité, as well as Orléans and Orléans-Cléry. It is part of the Loire Valley in a broad sense. Today Centre-Loire is more a historic and reference name than an official wine zone. The name reflects the location: the area lies in the centre of the country, on the upper Loire.
