📜 Pouilly-Fumé
White wines from Sauvignon Blanc on the right bank of the Loire, opposite Sancerre.
Pouilly-Fumé is a white wine from Sauvignon Blanc on the right bank of the Loire in France. The vineyards lie around the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire, directly opposite Sancerre on the other bank. The area belongs to the Central Loire. The appellation is a protected designation of origin (PDO).
The word "fumé" means "smoky". The wines got that nickname for a light smoky shade that is linked to flinty soils rich in flint. The wine is usually dry and fresh, with aromas of citrus, gooseberry, herbs and a mineral finish. It is more restrained and strict than many Sauvignon Blancs from elsewhere.
Pouilly-Fumé suits fish, seafood and goat cheese, which is also made in the Loire. It can age for several years. It should not be confused with Pouilly-Fuissé, a Burgundy wine made from Chardonnay: that is a different wine from a different place. Pouilly-Fumé is a Loire classic.
