📜 Sancerre
A famous white wine from Sauvignon Blanc on the hills around Sancerre in the upper Loire.
Sancerre is a famous white wine from Sauvignon Blanc, made on the hills around the town of Sancerre in the upper Loire, in central France. The town stands on a high hill above the river. The name is protected as a PDO.
The Sauvignon Blanc grape gives dry, fresh wines here, with high acidity and aromas of citrus, gooseberry, fresh grass and stone. The soils vary: limestone, caillottes (pebbles) and flinty clay called silex. They give the wines minerality. Besides whites, Sancerre also produces reds and rosés from Pinot Noir, which are light and fruity.
Sancerre belongs to the Central Loire zone, where another famous appellation, Pouilly-Fumé, is close by. The white wine goes well with goat cheese, which is also made here, such as Crottin de Chavignol. It is served chilled with fish, oysters and salads. In recent years Sancerre has become known worldwide as a model of Sauvignon Blanc style.
