📍 Condado de Huelva
A western zone with the white Zalema grape.
Condado de Huelva is a wine zone in south-western Spain, in Huelva province, in Andalusia, near the Portuguese border and the Atlantic. It is part of Andalusia. Doñana National Park and the mouth of the Guadalquivir are nearby.
The climate is warm and Atlantic, with mild winters. Soils are sandy and calcareous. The main local white grape is Zalema, making light white wines; Listán de Huelva also grows, related to Palomino from Jerez. The whites are usually dry and soft, with modest acidity.
The zone has long been famous for fortified wines: Condado Pálido, pale and aged under a layer of yeast like sherry, and Condado Viejo, oxidised and darker. Sweet versions exist too.
Today much of the output is young dry white, served chilled with seafood. The famous Jerez lies nearby, but Condado de Huelva is closer to Portugal and the Atlantic. The young whites are served chilled with fried fish, prawns and ham, and the fortified ones as an aperitif. Check the label: the words “Joven” or “Pálido” usually mean a young or pale wine, and “Viejo” an aged, darker, oxidised one. These styles differ clearly in taste and serving.
