Côtes du Rhône is a large appellation of the Rhône valley in south-eastern France. Mostly it is red wine from Grenache and Syrah. The appellation covers many villages, mainly in the southern part of the valley.
The typical red blend is Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault added. White wines are made from Viognier and other grapes. There are also rosés. All are still wines, without bubbles. Red Côtes du Rhône is usually soft and fruity, with berry and spice aromas, and can be drunk right away.
Côtes du Rhône is the most widespread appellation of the Rhône and the base of higher levels: above it stand "Côtes du Rhône Villages" and individual villages such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape. For a buyer it is an everyday, affordable wine, clear and reliable. It belongs to the Rhône Valley area. It is served with meat, pasta, stews and cheese. Whites and rosés are better drunk chilled.
