🥃 Drambuie
Scottish whisky-based liqueur with heather honey, herbs and spices, 40% ABV; the brand was registered in 1893 and now belongs to William Grant & Sons.
Drambuie is a golden Scottish liqueur based on Scotch whisky with heather honey, herbs and spices. It is 40% ABV, as strong as whisky itself. The trademark was registered in 1893, and since 2014 it has been owned by the Scottish family company William Grant & Sons, known for the whisky Glenfiddich.
The origin of the recipe is wrapped in legend. According to family tradition, after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 Prince Charles Edward Stuart hid on the Isle of Skye, and Captain John MacKinnon, who sheltered him, received the recipe of the drink as thanks. Historians regard this story as a later invention for advertising. What is documented is something else: in the 1880s James Ross, the owner of a hotel in Broadford on Skye, replaced the brandy in the recipe with Scotch whisky, named the drink Drambuie and registered the brand in 1893.
After Ross's death, his widow sold the recipe to Malcolm MacKinnon. Commercial production began in 1910 in Edinburgh, and in 1916 Drambuie became the first liqueur to enter the wine cellars of the House of Lords. The MacKinnon family owned the brand for about a hundred years, until it sold it to William Grant & Sons in 2014. Since 2019 the liqueur has been bottled at the new owner's facilities. The producer explains the name with a Gaelic phrase meaning roughly “the drink that satisfies”.
The composition is known only in general terms: Scotch whisky, heather honey, herbs and spices. The exact recipe is kept secret. The best-known cocktail with Drambuie is the Rusty Nail, a mix of Scotch and the liqueur.
Why this matters to you. Drambuie is a liqueur, so it is sweeter than whisky but no weaker: 40% ABV, like many whiskies. The honey in it does not make the drink “light”; it has as much alcohol as strong spirits. The legend of the prince is best taken as part of the brand's history rather than as proven fact. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol consumption is safe.
