🍷 Extra brut

Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 4

A very dry sparkling wine with almost no sweetness.

Extra brut is a very dry sparkling wine with almost no perceptible sweetness. Under EU rules it has 0 to 6 grams of sugar per litre. That is drier than brut, which allows up to 12 g/l, but slightly softer than brut nature, with no more than 3 g/l.

The sweetness of sparkling wine is set by the dosage, a small amount of liqueur added after the yeast sediment is removed. Extra brut gets little or no dosage. The taste is therefore clean and fresh, with bright acidity and a clear sense of grape and place.

The term appears on Champagne, Cava, Italian sparkling wines such as Franciacorta, and Crémant. That is why it is known in France, Spain and Italy. Extra brut suits people who like a dry taste, and it pairs well with oysters, fish and seafood.
