📜 Falerno del Massico
The heir of ancient Rome's famous Falernian wine, from Mount Massico in northern Campania.
Falerno del Massico is an Italian wine with a protected name (PDO) from Campania. It is made on the slopes of Mount Massico in the north of the region, not far from Naples. The name recalls the famous Falernian wine of ancient Rome, which the Romans valued very highly.
The modern wine is a successor to that tradition, not a copy: grapes and methods are different today. The red is made mainly from Aglianico, with Piedirosso added and sometimes others. The white is made from Falanghina. Reds are full, with tannins and aromas of dark berries and spice. The white is fresh, with a floral and fruity touch. The wines come in different types: young, aged and also old after long ageing.
Falerno belongs to the red, white and still wines of Campania. The name has become a brand: it recalls the region's ancient history and draws attention. Of course, today's wine cannot be called the same drink the Romans had. But the place of origin is shared.
