π Piedirosso
A red grape of Campania that makes light to medium wines, including Taburno.
Piedirosso is a red grape from Campania, in Italy. The name means red foot: the stalks of the bunches are reddish. Wines from it are light to medium in body, with soft tannins and a fruity taste.
The grape grows around Naples and on the islands. The main places are Vesuvius, the Campi Flegrei, the island of Ischia, Capri, and also the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast. Many of these places lie on volcanic soils, which give the wine a light mineral touch. The grape is used in the red wine Taburno, and in Falerno del Massico, where Piedirosso is blended with other grapes.
Piedirosso wines suit fish dishes, pizza and pasta with tomato sauce. They can be drunk slightly chilled. This grape rarely leaves Campania and is therefore less known than Aglianico.
Piedirosso shows how, in one Italian region, grapes of different character live side by side: from powerful Aglianico to light Piedirosso.
