An old white grape of Campania in southern Italy.

Falanghina is an old white grape from Campania in southern Italy. It grows around Naples and inland. Known zones include Falanghina del Sannio near the town of Benevento, the Campi Flegrei by the Bay of Naples, the slopes of Vesuvius, the Sorrentine Peninsula and Galluccio.

Falanghina wine is usually fresh and dry, with floral and citrus aromas, sometimes with notes of pear and almond. Good acidity makes it handy with fish and seafood, local pizza and pasta. Sparkling and sweet wines are also made from this grape.

The vine tolerates heat and the volcanic soils common in Campania. Many vineyards here grow on volcanic slopes, which gives the wine a mineral shade.

The grape was long almost forgotten, but in recent decades it has become popular again and is planted more and more. In Italy it is one of the main white grapes of the south.
