📍 Campania
The volcanic region of Naples with ancient grapes.
Campania is a region in southern Italy around Naples. The volcanoes Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields lie here, and the soil is rich in volcanic ash. In antiquity the famous Falernian wine was shipped from here to Rome. Today Campania is known for old grape varieties that have grown on its slopes for hundreds of years.
The main red grapes are Aglianico, used for the powerful wine Taurasi, and Piedirosso. Whites include Fiano (Fiano di Avellino), Greco (Greco di Tufo), Falanghina and Coda di Volpe. These wines are fresh, with marked minerality and a floral scent, and the best age for many years. The region has several DOCG zones.
Campania includes Irpinia, the Phlegraean Fields, Sannio and Vesuvius, as well as the islands of Ischia and Capri, the Amalfi coast, Cilento and the Volturno valley. The zones differ greatly in altitude and climate: the coast is warm and humid, while in the mountains of Irpinia snow falls in winter.
For comparison with its neighbours: to the north lies Lazio, to the east Apulia and Basilicata, where Aglianico also grows in the Vulture, and to the south Calabria.
