📍 Iași

Iași is a wine district in north-eastern Romania, on the hills around the city of the same name in the historic region of Moldavia. It is the third most populous city in Romania. From 1564 to 1859 it was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia, and from 1859 to 1862 of the United Principalities. The district belongs to the Moldavian Hills zone (Romania) and is protected as a PDO.

White, red, still and sparkling wines are made here. The main grapes are Fetească Albă and Fetească Neagră. Fetească Neagră is a red grape regarded as Romanian: it is described as originating in Uricani, in the Iași wine district. It gives dark wines with plum and spice aromas that age well. Fetească Albă is a light white grape with a floral aroma.

The climate is moderately continental, with cold winters and warm summers, so the vine grows on slopes with good sun.

Iași is called the cultural capital of Romania: the city has long been one of the centres of Romanian science and art. In Moldavia, to which the district belongs, other wine districts lie nearby, Cotnari and Huși.
