A district near the Mureș.

Aiud is a wine district in Transylvania, central Romania, in the valley of the Mureș river, not far from the city of Alba Iulia. The district belongs to the Transylvanian Plateau wine region. The climate is cool with a long autumn, which suits white wines.

The main quality of Aiud wines is freshness and aroma. The main grapes are the whites Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă, Welschriesling, as well as Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Fetească Regală gives bright wines with floral aromas and good acidity, and in warm years sweet ones are made from it too.

Vineyards lie on hills, on clay and limestone soils. Transylvania is one of the coolest wine-growing areas of Romania, so whites are preferred here.

Aiud is part of the Transylvanian Plateau, near Alba Iulia, Sibiu and Târnave. For Romanian wine it is one of the country's white wine centres. Aiud whites suit fish, poultry and Romanian dishes such as polenta (mămăligă) with cheese. The name Aiud on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
