🥃 GlenAllachie
Single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Speyside, near Ben Rinnes, designed in 1967; owned since 2017 by Billy Walker, Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson.
GlenAllachie is a distillery and single malt Scotch whisky brand in Speyside, in sight of Ben Rinnes. According to the producer, William Delmé-Evans designed it in 1967 and Mackinlay McPherson, the distilling arm of Scottish & Newcastle, built it; first production followed in 1968.
History. In 2017 Billy Walker, Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson acquired the distillery from Chivas Brothers. The first core range of single malts, the first the distillery had ever released, launched in 2018, and the visitor centre opened in 2019.
How it is made. The producer describes a traditionally unpeated spirit with a four-water mashing cycle and double distillation. The wash ferments for 160 hours in eight stainless steel washbacks. Water comes from two dams on the north-east side of Ben Rinnes, and about 50,000 casks mature in 16 warehouses on site.
Range. Releases include 10, 11, 18, 19, 21 and 35 year old whiskies, matured in casks such as Pedro Ximénez, oloroso, Palo Cortado, red wine and virgin oak. All are bottled at high strength, non-chill filtered and at natural colour, with several cask strength batches.
Why it matters to you. Check age, cask type and strength on the label: cask strength bottlings are much stronger. By law Scotch whisky is matured in Scotland for at least three years and bottled at not less than 40% ABV. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol consumption is safe.
