🥃 GlenAllachie 12 Year Old
GlenAllachie's flagship expression since 2018: 12 years in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks and fresh oak; 46% ABV.
GlenAllachie 12 Year Old is the flagship of the GlenAllachie core range, introduced in July 2018. According to Scotchwhisky.com, the distillery owner Billy Walker called it the heart of the range. It is bottled at 46% ABV according to the official website and Scotchwhisky.com; the whisky is bottled without chill filtration and without colouring.
The whisky is made from barley malt; fermentation at the distillery is long and distillation is double. According to Scotchwhisky.com, it matures in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks and in fresh oak casks. The official website describes dark chocolate, treacle, heather honey, marzipan and orchard fruit. A long fermentation usually gives a fruitier spirit, while the sherry adds richness.
Why it matters to you. This is the middle of the range: GlenAllachie 8 Year Old is younger and lighter, and GlenAllachie 15 Year Old has a stronger sherry influence. If you choose one expression to understand the brand, start with the 12-year-old. The WHO reminds that there is no safe dose of alcohol.
