🥃 Hrvatska travarica
Croatian brandy flavoured with herbs of coastal and mountain Croatia; EU protected name since 24.04.2012, at least 37.5% ABV.
Hrvatska travarica is a herbal brandy from Croatia, protected in the EU since 24 April 2012. It is made by steeping aromatic plants of the coast and mountains in grape or fruit brandy or in wine distillate. The drink is light, yellow-greenish, with a herbal aroma and a slight bitterness; bottles may contain sprigs of herbs.
Herbs. According to the documentation, the most common are melissa, anise, sage, rosemary, fennel, myrtle, thyme, marjoram, mint, wormwood and bay laurel, plants of coastal and mountain Croatia. The selection depends on the region and the season, and each producer keeps the exact proportions in its own recipe.
How it is made. The herbs are macerated, and the infusion is added to the base (wine distillate, grape brandy, pomace brandy or fruit brandy) always in the same ratio, so that the taste does not change. The colour comes from the herbs themselves. The finished travarica has at least 37.5% ABV, volatile substances from 140 g, and methanol up to 1000 g per hectolitre of pure alcohol.
History. Herbal brandy has long been used as a folk remedy, for wounds and digestion. According to the documentation, the name ‘travarica’ comes from Dalmatia. Production was already regulated by a 1963 ordinance on beverage quality, and the EU register lists it among other spirit drinks.
Why this matters to you. Hrvatska travarica is a brandy, not a sweet liqueur: its strength is the same, at least 37.5% ABV. The herbs give aroma but do not make the drink healthy, and folk recipes do not replace medicine. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe amount of alcohol.
