π Kisi
A white grape from Kakheti, Georgia; it makes amber wines in qvevri.
Kisi is a white wine grape from Kakheti, a winemaking region of Georgia. It was revived in the late 20th century, when it had nearly disappeared. Today Kisi is regarded as one of the most interesting Georgian white grapes. Two types of wine are made from Kisi. The first is a pale, dry wine in a European style, aromatic, with notes of apricot, peach and flowers. The second is amber wine made the traditional way: the juice ferments with the skins in a qvevri, a clay vessel buried in the ground. This wine is fuller, with tannin and notes of dried fruit. Kisi is grown in Kakheti, including the Akhmeta area and Kakhuri. There is a wine named Kisi Magarani. The grape fits well into Georgian winemaking and is one of the country's local varieties, of which there are over five hundred. It is served chilled, with cheese and dishes of Georgian cuisine. The grape matters for keeping local traditions alive.
