📍 Kakheti
Georgia's main wine region in the Alazani Valley, with about three quarters of its vineyards.
Kakheti is the main wine region of Georgia, in its eastern part. Here, in the valley of the Alazani river, on the slopes of the Greater Caucasus, lie about three quarters of all the country's vineyards. The climate is mild, with a warm summer and autumn, ideal for grapes.
The region is divided into Inner and Outer Kakheti. It has many well-known names: Tsinandali, Gurjaani, Vazisubani, Manavi, Kardenakhi, Tibaani, Mukuzani and Napareuli. Each name refers to a particular village or district and a certain wine style.
The main grapes are the white Rkatsiteli and the red Saperavi. Saperavi gives dark, full-bodied reds that keep well. The classic method of Kakheti is the Kakhetian method: grapes ferment with skins, stems and seeds in large clay qvevri buried in the ground. This produces amber white wines with tannins.
Kakheti is a historic region where viticulture goes back thousands of years. Here wine is part of culture, holidays and hospitality. Many families make wine at home for themselves.
