A red grape from Emilia, Italy; it makes pale sparkling Lambrusco.

Lambrusco di Sorbara is a red grape from Emilia in Italy, from the area near Modena. It makes pale sparkling Lambrusco.

It is one of the Lambrusco family of grapes. The wine is pale, with bright acidity and aromas of violets and red berries. The colour is paler than in other Lambruscos: sometimes it is more pink. It is most often made sparkling, dry or off-dry, and called Lambrusco di Sorbara. Rosé versions exist too. The second fermentation usually takes place in a closed tank.

The grape grows in Emilia-Romagna, where the cuisine is rich and fatty: Parmesan, mortadella, ham. A fresh sparkling wine with acidity cleanses the palate well. It is customarily served chilled, around 10-12 °C. In Italy Lambrusco has long been part of local culture, while elsewhere it is sometimes wrongly thought of as sweet and simple. In fact good dry examples are fresh and complex. The grape's name is tied to the town of Sorbara in the province of Modena.
